Biotene

Biotene/Oralbalance – the complete Dry Mouth Treatment.

Most adults will suffer at some point in time with Xerostomia, commonly known as Dry Mouth. Their symptoms can range from mild dryness to severe discomfort, including the inability to speak, chew or swallow. Persistent dry mouth also increases decay, bad breath and gum disease.

Oral complications occur in almost all patients receiving radiation for head and neck malignancies, in more than 75% of bone marrow transplant recipients, and nearly 40% of patients receiving chemotherapy. Some complications may only occur during treatment; others such as Dry Mouth, may persist for many years after treatment and lead to serious oral conditions, especially if, in certain cases of oral cancer, the salivary glands have been removed surgically.

Biotene’s range of oral care products are specially developed for dry mouth sufferers.

bioXtra

bioXtra® Caring for Dry Mouths

There are numerous factors which can cause a reduction in the quantity or quality of saliva and consequently disturb mouth’s antibacterial protective mechanisms. Head & neck radiotherapy or surgery and more than 1800 commonly prescribed medications (anti-depressants, anti-hypertensives, anti-inflammatory) lead to a Dry Mouth. Stress and age may also contribute to this.

As a result of the loss of natural moisture, speaking becomes difficult and this goes with troubles while chewing and swallowing. Dry Mouth, synonym of a decreased salivary protection, has as a consequence a development of oral problems (bad breath, dental plaque, caries, inflammation of the gums, ulcers, receding gums or even tooth loss). Those distressing and painful symptoms severely affect the quality of life.

Resulting from the latest research the innovative, patented bioXtra® products provide an immediate feeling of moisture whilst helping to maintain the mouth’s natural balance. bioXtra® consists of six interrelated oral care products with active ingredients which imitate saliva’s natural protective factors:

  • Moisturising Gel and Gel Mouthspray, as saliva substitutes;
  • Mild Toothpaste and Alcohol-Free Mouthrinse, as mild daily oral hygiene care;
  • Sugar-Free Chewing Gum and Sucking Tablets, as natural saliva stimulators.

CDx Laboratories

Medicine’s most significant strides against epithelial cancer have resulted from the development of accurate, routine tests for dysplasia. The patented OralCDx® system provides this benefit by facilitating raid, painless testing of the small white and red tissue changes that upon careful examination can be found in 5-15% of all adult patients. While most of these innocuous appearing tissue changes are indeed harmless, up to 4% may contain dysplastic cells. At this stage the dysplastic lesion can typically be easily and completely removed, and the development of oral cancer is potentially prevented. Since its US introduction in 2000, OralCDx testing by over 30,000 physicians and dentists has already prevented the development of thousands of oral cancers. The high sensitivity and specificity of OralCDx were successfully demonstrated in the one of the largest US clinical trials ever conducted in oral medicine, and the results were published as a cover article in the Journal of the American Dental Association. These results have since been duplicated in numerous independent US and European clinical studies. The use of the oral brush biopsy as a highly accurate method of detecting precancers and cancers was incorporated into the 2006 National Cancer Institute’s Physician Data Query. OralCDx is now expanding availability throughout Europe and Asia.

Inovio Biomedical Corporation

Inovio Biomedical Corporation (AMEX: INO) is a late stage biomedical company developing novel therapies enabled by electroporation, with a focus on addressing critical unmet treatment needs in oncology and DNA vaccines. Clinical results validate its local cancer therapy’s ability to preserve healthy tissue while selectively killing cancer cells in solid tumors, which make up 85% of all new cancer incidences. Compared to surgery, this treatment is designed to be simpler, superior in its ability to preserve tissue structure and function (providing quality of life benefits), and lower cost.

The company is treating patients in two European pre-marketing head & neck (H&N) and skin cancer studies designed to support the planned European introduction of its MedPulser® Electroporation Therapy System in 2008. In addition, Inovio is conducting two Phase III pivotal studies in head and neck cancer, with completion of patient enrollment expected in 2008. Inovio is also completing a breast cancer clinical trial using its Selective Electrochemical Tumor Ablation therapy (SECTA).

International Academy of Oral Oncology

The International Academy of Oral Oncology [IAOO], established in 2005, draws together for the first time formally, health care professionals and scientists worldwide, working on issues relating to the etiopathogenesis, epidemiology, prevention and management of oral and perioral tumors and of orofacial disease in patients with malignancies.

The concept of an international academy to draw together people working in the field of oral oncology, so that advances in medical science can be made and translated speedily into benefits for patients, arose from the interactions between Alexander Rapidis and Crispian Scully, whilst working together during 2004/2005 as chairmen organising an international congress on oral cancer, in Crete, Greece. Discussions with their mutual colleague John Langdon, a leading research clinician from UK confirmed that there was a real need for such a formal group. Therefore leading clinicians in the field from USA (Jatin Shah) and Europe (Jean-Louis Lefebvre) were approached to form a steering committee.

The steering committee nominated a number of active colleagues in the field from around the world, mostly clinicians or scientists recently publishing in the field as identified by MEDLINE. These colleagues were then formally approached personally by telephone. The first 150 contacted were unanimous in their enthusiasm for such an Academy - and thus was established the International Academy of Oral Oncology.

IAOO now consists of a very wide range of health care professionals and scientists worldwide, leaders in their fields, who have united to establish an Academy which draws its authority from its Founding Fellowship of people of repute worldwide, leaders in their fields, in the only independent international body representing the interests of the whole spectrum of fields related to oral oncology.

Fellowship of the Academy is open to all with an interest in the field, subject to certain conditions detailed in the constitution. www.eastman.ucl.ac.uk/iaoo

Merck Serono

Merck focuses its oncology research on the development of novel therapies that specifically target cancer cells. The monoclonal antibody Erbitux® (cetuximab), Merck's first oncology product, specifically blocks the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Erbitux enhances the effect of chemotherapy and raditation. Merck has also acquired the rights for the oral cancer treatment UFT® (tegafur-uracil).

Merck’s oncology research activities focus on identifying compounds that specifically interfere with one or more of the key cellular processes or pathways which influence the growth and spread of cancer cells. The resulting range of new compounds, including the humanized EGFR targeting monoclonal antibody matuzumab, the cancer vaccine Stimuvax® (formerly referred to as L-BLP25), the angiogenesis inhibitor cilengitide and several immunocytokines, are currently undergoing clinical development.
